The Acadian Prairie - Theodule follows several families as they struggle to survive in the area of Louisiana known as the Acadian Prairie. Settled as early as the 1790s, the area known as Faquetaique sheltered settlers anxious to be left in peace even as European Wars raged around them. Settlers from France, Spain, and the former settlers of Acadia in Canada settled along the slow-moving bayous of the area, fiercely independent and tied strongly to family and faith. Through the heat and humidity of the summers and mild winters, the settlers faced many dangers: accident and disease, fierce storms, the predations of thieves and hostile forces - and occasionally - their own families. Follow the coming of age of Theodule and Azelle Dupre, Emile and Laurina Ortego, the slaves Kylie and Cicily, the traiteuses Olivia and Little Bird, and the native survivors still living in the region as they all face the hostile forces around them. The Vigilance-anti-vigilance War of 1859 and the Union, and Confederate, and the Jayhawker forces during the Civil War proved to be deadly threats to the petite habitants of the Prairie. This and succeeding volumes follow the same families as they face the trials and atribulations of growing in the Acadian Prairie between 1836 and 1960.
